AWIM National Olympics - A Report
The National Car Design & Build Competition for School Children gets
Tremendous Response
SAEINDIA’s AWIM culminated with participation of various schools
children at Balewadi Wisdom High International School of Nashik
clinches top spot in competition
A World in Motion, AWIM, SAEINDIA’s Car Design & Build Competition
culminated at the Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi on
14th November 2009 on the Children’s day. The event hosted
participation of 17 school student teams which were short listed
from Regional Olympics, out of several schools, nationwide. 68
bright, aspiring school students who are presently
studying in their
6th grade participated in the event with great gusto and passion. AWIM, which was organized in India, is the biggest education
initiative for students to be inducted into renowned automotive and
allied companies. The event was an opportunity for the students to
test and hone their managerial, artistic and presentation skills
besides their scientific know how.
SAEINDIA, in association with The Automotive Research Association of
India (ARAI) and sponsors Tata Johnson Controls, Mahindra & Mahindra,
John Deere and Eaton charged up students during the event. Ankur
Sharma of IDEA Design Centre, Ahmedabad was the Convener and
Kaustubh Bhat of COEP was the co-convener.
Mr. Josef Memmel, Chief Operating Officer of Tata Johnson Controls
was the Chief Guest. Mr. Shrikant Marathe, Director of ARAI & Mr.
Amitabh Dasgupta, Resident Editor of Sakal Times were the Guests of
Honour, during the Inaugural Function.
The competition saw students of 10 to 12 years work as a team, apply
scientific design concepts and explore the principles of jet
propulsion, friction and air resistance to create and race balloon
powered toy cars named ‘Jet-Toys’. The competition was be judged by
a panel of eminent personalities from the automotive & art field.
Mr. Carsten Spichalsky of Volkswagen, Dr Sukrut Thipse of ARAI, Mr.
G. Jayapal of Tata Johnson Controls, Prof. Gaurang Shah of MIT
Institute of Design, Mr. Shailendra Jagtap of John Deere and Mrs.
Neepa Vora were the judges for the event.
Across the globe, many corporations have committed their resources
to support A World In Motion® programs and have backed the event and
provided employees who volunteer their time and talent to train
students and teachers. So far in India around 9000 students and 200
teachers in 80 schools have been trained including some of the Zilla
Parished and Corporation schools. Marathi Medium Students from Zilla
Parishad School from Nighoje and students from a Tamil medium school
(Danish Mission School) from Panrutti , Tamilnadu were able to mix
up and compete with Convent Schools students with confidence. They
were allowed to give presentation in Marathi and Tamil respectively.
The students displayed more than one car and decided name, logo &
slogan of their team and wrote the specification of their vehicles
in a Chart. It was a tough time for the Judges due to numerous ties.
The aesthetics round was the most difficult one to judge, since each
& every car was beautifully decorated. One of the team had converted
the car into a glider and it literally glided from a height to land
safely on the stage.
Mr. Carsten Spichalsky, Technical Head of Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd.
was the Chief Guest in a glittering Valedictory Function. Team from
Wisdom High International School, Nashik was the Winner, who would
